Surf Report for the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of November

East Coast

With the weather and winds that were blowing up the east coast on Friday there was a good chance for a wave on Friday with the forecast predicting 3-4ft for those free to partake. Saturday is looking like the forecast could bring 1-2ft conditions for Saturday morning for those keen as there will be some remnants from Friday’s swell but this is slightly less than what it usually takes to get going but it is backed by a 10 second period. the swell looks to drop out quite quickly so I would recommend getting on it early as it may fade. Sunday sees the swell drop below the required amount to bring waves with another bump then for Monday for anyone still keen. South westerly winds all weekend so this should have nice offshore conditions for Wicklow.

South Coast

The South westerly winds that are bringing the waves up the Irish Sea are also the winds that are going to make for onshore conditions in Tramore with 4-5ft conditions forecast but the onshore winds may make for smaller blown over conditions for both Saturday and Sunday with Sunday showing slightly smaller in the 2-3ft blown over conditions.

South West

Garretstown is showing that the conditions are going to bring 6-8ft plus conditions but the wind direction is going to mean onshore conditions making for messy waves due to the gusts that are coming through. Sunday sees slightly smaller in the 5-6ft range but the winds are still blowing 15-25mph onshore meaning messy white water conditions for the whole weekend. Inch Beach in Kerry is showing maxed out conditions all weekend with onshore winds so give it a miss.

West Coast

Lahinch was showing to have large white water conditions for Friday and this looks like it will continue through to Saturday and Sunday as the winds turn more westerly for both days with good strong onshore waves that will probably hit 5-6ft blown over on both days so this should be avoided as it will only be suitable for lessons in the white water. Tides are high at 1.30 Saturday and 2.30 Sunday so avoid going near the water 2 hours either side of high tide. With the clocks having gone back this would leave no time after high for getting back in.

North West

Strandhill will probably be maxed out at the size forecast with the winds blowing moderate to strong cross onshore for both days with the waves predicted to be well overhead but with the winds they may appear smaller but the 12 second period means good strong power in the waves. One could check Aughris as there may be shelter in the corner from the south and south west winds. Streedagh may be also be an option but check the winds as it really needs more east in the winds for better conditions so it will be cross shore at best. Bundoran will be maxed out for Tullan for the weekend with the only option showing as an onshore Rossnowlagh for those that are keen but again I would not be expecting to make it out the back with the winds and swell size forecast.

North Coast

Conditions around Portrush could be nice with the winds improving for East Strand with it starting out to be westerly but this looks to move more southerly by the afternoon on Saturday with 2-3ft conditions in the morning building to 4ft+ by late afternoon. Sunday at East Strand continues to be 3-4ft and building up to 4ft plus by midday with the winds starting south westerly and moving to south by evening so not a bad day of surf for Sunday in the Port.

Surf Report for the October Bank Holiday

East Coast

Saturday on the East Coast should have some waves that are coming in from the north which will work at the north end of the beach in Wicklow with the winds blowing cross shore from the north north westerly winds that will bring colder conditions with the better conditions earlier in the morning when the swell is at its largest but this will still only bring 2ft conditions with possibly better on sets. Sunday sees that swell drop back a little to a poorer north swell with a much weaker 6 second period which will only make for 1ft waves with cold northerly winds turning offshore later in the day but not good enough as the waves will be too small with Monday only seeing small to flat conditions.

South Coast

Tramore looks to have clean conditions for Friday evening when it should be 2-3ft before the swell drops back to become small to flat for Saturday with a small wind swell pulse coming through on Sunday afternoon until dark when there is another chance at some 2ft conditions but with cross shore winds from the west north westerly. Monday turns to 1ft waves with cross shore winds dropping back to breezes by evening.

South West

Conditions around Garretstown are showing 1-2ft for Saturday with bigger for Sunday but this is only a 6 second period so expect 2-3ft weaker waves with onshore conditions with a little better for Monday in terms of swell but the winds are still onshore making for messy conditions. Inch Beach in Kerry will see the primary swell coming from the north which always struggles to get in so while the charts are showing 3-4ft, this will be more likely 1ft with cold northerly winds turning westerly onshore into Sunday. The swell is still from the north Sunday and it’s a small period swell meaning that it won’t bend well to get into Inch so expect 1-2ft at best weak blown onshore waves with Monday still bringing northerly waves but this comes up to 11 seconds meaning that it could bring 2-3ft conditions and lighter onshore winds but still messy from the previous days onshore winds.

West Coast

Lahinch is showing good waves but this is unlikely given the north in the swell meaning that it will probably only be small to flat 1ft at best conditions on Saturday with north westerly winds making for cold cross shore bumps on the small waves. Sunday sees this continue with a slight touch more west on the direction making for 2-3ft conditions but by Sunday the winds have turning westerly making for onshore messy conditions, good for lessons or those keen for some white water waves. Monday afternoon looks to see the winds drop back a bit but the winds that have been around for the previous days will see bumpy faces on the waves with 2-3ft waves at best. Tides are high at 8am Saturday, 7.30am Sunday (clocks change!) and 8am Monday so leave at least 2 hours after high or when it has dropped off the rocks before entering the water.

North West

Strandhill will see plenty of swell getting into the bay from the north west swell direction but the winds are also north westerly making for nowhere along that coast for shelter meaning messy onshore conditions Saturday that then turn westerly Sunday meaning the 3-4ft conditions will still be onshore and messy and on into Monday when the north westerly direction winds return with 5-6ft blown over conditions. For those keen, it would be Streedagh but this will be onshore all weekend and if you are that keen, I would just go to Rossnowlagh where it will be cross shore but with the shape of the bay, it holds onshore a little better. Tullan will not be an option for the weekend with the swells and wind directions but Rossnowlagh will be the only safe onshore option.

North Coast

Unfortunately the north winds that are blighting most spots around the country are also going to ruin things in Portrush for the weekend with Saturday seeing 6-7ft conditions on the charts but these will probably show as 3-4ft blown onshore with the winds set to hit 35mph onshore. Sunday sees the winds swing westerly making West Strand a mess with cross shore conditions for East Strand and Whiterocks making it messy 2-3ft weak wind swell conditions before Monday returns to northerly winds leaving no shelter for any spots. For those who are super keen there may be a little shelter from the northerly winds at the north end of West Strand at Babushka where the pier could offer a small window of shelter but this is limited and swell may not make it around but exercise care as there could be rips where the water needs to exit the beach.

Surf Report for the weekend of the 18th and 19th of October

East Coast

It looks like there could be waves for the weekend on the east coast but the wind direction is not great. Saturday is showing 2ft waves but the period is between 4 and 6 seconds as the winds are blowing from the south east making for short period onshore waves which will be very weak. Sunday looks to have a better run of waves with the period increasing to 8 seconds meaning that it is more of a ground swell with waves up to 3-4ft in the morning but this looks to fade fairly fast. The winds are still not coming from a great angle for Sunday morning with the south east in the direction meaning onshore conditions until around lunch time when it looks to go southerly which may make for slightly better conditions.

South Coast

On both Saturday and Sunday Tramore will be onshore with the winds up to 25mph plus making for messy weak onshore conditions. Waves should be 2-3ft Saturday and much bigger on Sunday up to 3-5ft but these will be blown over from the onshores.

South West

Garretstown is looking onshore for both days with the waves in the 2-3ft range with Sunday showing more like 3-5ft with onshore winds so this will make for messy conditions on both days. Inch Beach in Kerry is showing moderate to strong offshore conditions on Saturday but this should be less with the land drag with waves in the 3-4ft range with Sunday showing southerly winds and waves in the 4-6ft range making for cross shore bumpy conditions.

West Coast

Saturday in Lahinch is looking to blow cross offshore all day with winds showing to gust up to 25mph plus but this should be less with the land drag but waves will only be in the 1-2ft range for Saturday with Sunday showing bigger 3ft conditions with bigger waves on sets with winds blowing from the south making for cross shore conditions with the tides high at 4pm Saturday and closer to 5pm Sunday but the tides are bigger so leave the full two hours before to exit the water safely.

North West

Strandhill is looking to show no swell for Saturday and only a small 1ft for Sunday with offshore winds on both days. In the Bundoran area it is looking like Tullan only weekend with 1ft waves on Saturday with moderate offshore winds making for super clean tiny waves with Sunday having similar but only slightly bigger at 1-1.5ft with lighter offshore winds.

North Coast

Portrush is also looking small to flat for this weekend with only a small less than 0.5ft swell on Saturday with moderate to strong offshore winds from the south east making for clean but small conditions. Sunday has the primary swell blowing waves out to sea making for small to flat conditions again.

Surf Report for the weekend of the 11th and 12th of October

East Coast

Things are looking very flat on the east coast for the weekend with no sign of any incoming swell.

South Coast

Tramore is also looking small to flat for the weekend with very light winds all weekend.

South West

Conditions in Garretstown do not look like they will break the 1ft mark on Saturday with Sunday showing very little by way of swell also with 1ft probably being the peak of it with light offshore winds. Inch Beach in Kerry is showing a north west swell which always struggles to get into the bay so I would expect 2ft waves at a push with light offshore winds all day. Sunday should see similar to Saturday but this time from a south westerly swell but with a smaller 9 second period so with less push than Saturday.

West Coast

Saturday shows a north westerly swell for Lahinch which will be dropped in size as it bends around the corner which means that conditions will probably only be 1-2ft at best with very light breezes with the tide high first thing at 8.30am so out of the water until at least 10.30 but then good to go all day thereafter. On Sunday the swell is southerly but its small and will probably only go from 1ft with the possibility of 2ft but only on the tides with it good to get in the water after 11 or so.

North West

In Strandhill the conditions should be 3-4ft with the winds light offshore all day with it bigger in the morning than afternoon so best to get on it early with Sunday showing to have much smaller conditions as it drops back to 1-2ft at best with a much weaker swell. In the Bundoran area Saturday should be the better day with 3-4ft on Tullan Strand and 2ft for Rossnowlagh for the competition but this will be a little slower as the swell has to bend so really only for the longboards out there with winds so light they’re barely breezes. Sunday drops right back so this should only have 1-2ft for Tullan and probably flat for Rossy with offshore winds all day for both spots.

North Coast

Portrush had some chunky conditions on Friday but this looks to drop back a good bit for Saturday with 3ft conditions in the morning with a nice 11 second period and light offshore winds but this will drop back to 2ft by evening and further to 1-2ft by Sunday and 1ft by Sunday evening with offshore breezes still.

Surf Report for the 4th and 5th of October

With Storm Amy passing overhead on Friday evening into Saturday and Sunday for some spots, I can only recommend that you take extreme caution if considering going near the water and while I recommend that you don’t as the winds will be very strong from the west, the following surf report will be an advice on the possible conditions and not form any encouragement to go near or into the water. There are plenty more waves in the sea and there will always be more weekends to surf if you sit this one out. I can only recommend that you sit it out and watch some surf movies instead.

East Coast

Waves in Wicklow will be 1-2ft on the East coast as the winds will be blowing very strong offshore making the likelihood for waves coming into Wicklow as small on Saturday. Sunday sees the swell drop back down to small to flat with winds still moderately strong offshore.

South Coast

Waves on the south coast on Saturday should be in the region of 5ft plus but the winds will be very strong from the west making it very dangerous to enter the water on the south coast as there will be a lot of water moving around. Sunday sees the winds drop back but only slightly to 20mph plus from the west with waves in the 2-3ft range.

South West

Saturday in Garretstown is a no go zone. Sunday looks to have 4ft blown onshore conditions so again nothing really for improvers. Inch Beach in Kerry is a no go zone on Saturday into Sunday with strong onshore winds Saturday and moderate onshore winds Sunday leaving nothing for improvers but white water mess on Sunday. Sit it out.

West Coast

Lahinch is a no go zone Saturday with the winds forecast to hit above 55mph with the large swell to continue into Sunday and the winds not to drop below 20mph so I’d give it a miss.

North West

Saturday on the northwest is still feeling a lot of the hangover from Amy’s passing meaning that there will be no shelter for any of the spots. Sunday also has strong westerly winds meaning another day to give it a miss. Even the spots that would normally offer shelter like Aughris or Streedagh will be blown out. The Bundoran area will have nothing to offer for improvers either.

North Coast

Portrush does not escape the winds or swell and is a no go for Saturday with the winds exceeding 40mph onshore on the gusts for all three spots as there is a touch of north in the winds. Sunday has the same direction winds and similar strength as it gets the remnants of the storm as it passes over Portrush last meaning no surf until the storm clears.
