Surf Report for the weekend of the 18th and 19th of May

East Coast

The weekend on the east coast is looking small to flat with only a 1.8ft @ 6 second period swell on Saturday and smaller on Sunday leaving very little for waves with light offshore winds.

South Coast

Tramore could have some nice waves first thing in the morning in the 2-3ft range but this will drop as the day goes on and probably only give 1-2ft after midday so get on it early. Winds are a little gusty in the morning but still in the right direction to give clean-ish conditions. Sunday drops back to near flat for the day with light onshore breezes.

South West

Saturday morning is the best shout for Garretstown with 4ft conditions with the winds around the 10mph strength with slightly stronger on the gusts but with the wind direction this will be a little cross shore turning more offshore later on but it does also drop back later to 2-3ft but there should be waves all day for those keen. Sunday goes back to 1-2ft with light variable direction breezes but all less than 10mph until evening. Inch Beach in Kerry has some good direct swell coming into the bay with waves in the 5-6ft range but the winds are also coming from the north west meaning that it will be cross onshore all day with the strongest winds at 15-16mph in the morning dropping back to below 10 later on but still onshore so expect bumps on the waves. Sunday drops right back but with the possibility of 2-3ft in the morning for a short period before it drops further to 1-2ft with cross offshore winds.

West Coast

Lahinch has plenty of good swell on Saturday with a 4-5ft wave coming directly into the bay but the winds are blowing from the west north west which is cross onshore for Lahinch and this doesn’t change all day making for bumpy conditions but the waves should still be clean on the face for those who are keen. The waves will suit more longer craft as the period is only 10 seconds. Sunday sees the winds turn offshore and barely light breezes with the swell probably only hitting 1-2ft depending on the tides and times but best in the morning. Tides are high at 6.30am and pm Saturday and after 7am and pm Sunday so leave at least 2 hours either side for safe entry and exit.

North West

Strandhill and Bundoran also experience those northwest winds all day on Saturday so the conditions will not be clean with the winds gusting to near 20mph at times dropping off later in the evening with a good swell showing 3-4ft but that onshore will make it feel smaller but Sunday will be smaller for both Strandhill and also Tullan with waves hitting 2ft in Strandhill and probably 2-3ft at Tullan with light breezes offshore all day making for much nicer surfing conditions. Rossnowlagh might struggle to get over 1-2ft so Tullan will be the spot.

North Coast

The north coast cannot escape those northwest winds on Saturday with the waves showing 2-4ft but with that onshore wind, it will feel more like 1-2ft as the winds are a little more exposed on the north coast so the gusts are up to greater than 20mph on Saturday. Sunday sees the winds drop but also the swell so it will struggle to get above 1-2ft with light onshore breezes so really only good for lessons or foamie fun.

Surf Report for the weekend of the 11th and 12th of April

East Coast

Saturday is looking really nice on the east coast with the winds that are forecast bringing a small period but decent size swell up the channel and this should see 2-3ft conditions by midday and building from there for the afternoon. Winds will be strong from the south so care should be exercised when it comes to position in the water and certainly don’t surf alone. Sunday then drops back to 1ft with the odd slightly bigger set but the winds are still moderate to strong southerly.

South Coast

With the south west winds for Saturday and Sunday, Tramore is going to be blown on onshore for both days with messy conditions so probably one to give a miss.

South West

Garretstown is also blown out for both Saturday and Sunday with big unruly waves leaving little for surfing unless you can find shelter. Inch Beach in Kerry is also maxed out on both days so give it a wide berth also.

West Coast

Lahinch is also maxed out for the weekend with both Saturday and Sunday seeing strong onshore winds and very large swell on both days with Sunday slightly smaller than Saturday but still too big.

North West

The northwest does not escape any of the large conditions with winds blowing moderate to strong from the south making for offshore conditions but nearly too strong offshore to make the waves any way surfable in a safe way. The only spot that might kill off some of the swell size might be Aughris or Streedagh but the winds are still very strong so it might be best to sit it out. In the Bundoran area, Rossnowlagh will be the only beach but even at that the winds are still strong and in the wrong direction so expect large bumpy messy surf and big walls of white water that is probably more effort than it’s worth.

North Coast

Portrush has some sizeable waves on Saturday with a near 7ft at 16 second swell coming through which should bring 6-10ft conditions to East Strand so really only for those experienced in surfing large waves should venture out. By evening on Saturday it may have dropped back a bit but it should still be in the 6ft range with bigger sets coming through. Sunday sees it jump up again to 8-12ft conditions from a 8ft @15 second swell with winds only really favouring East Strand with a cross offshore wind gusting up to nearly 50mph making for strong conditions that are definitely only for the experienced surfers out there.

Surf Report for the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend

East Coast

It is looking like Saturday on the east coast could have some waves in the afternoon as things build for Storm Dave, yes you read that right, Storm Dave! Winds on the east coast will be blowing up the channel bringing gusts up to 60mph which should start around lunchtime and build all the way into the evening. Wicklow should have waves building throughout the day with the conditions getting bigger as the day goes on. Care should always be exercised when paddling out as the winds actually have a good bit of south west in them meaning cross offshore conditions but the strength is the thing to watch. This is just a small window for swell on Saturday as the swell looks to drop back off again by Sunday which should be small to flat. Monday has some wind swell but this will be small and probably weak conditions.

South Coast

Conditions around Tramore are looking onshore for the weekend as the wind conditions are blowing from the south for Saturday and Monday and from the west on Sunday so all round not a great set up with 3-4ft blown onshore conditions Saturday 4ft blown cross shore Sunday and back to 2-3ft blown onshore Monday.

South West

Garretstown is looking big and messy on Saturday with 6ft plus conditions with winds blowing up to 40mph onshore from the south west. Sunday then sees the winds turn to blow onshore again but this time from the west with bigger conditions. Monday then has the winds blow from the south south east blowing cross shore gusting up to 35mph. Inch Beach is big and messy for the weekend with Saturday being particularly bad in the face of the storm off the west coast. Winds look to be gusting up to nearly 60mph Saturday making it a no go and this continues on into Sunday with well overhead before Monday then sees the winds pick up again and go strong cross shore with waves in the 6-8ft range.

West Coast

Lahinch is looking strong southerly conditions with a touch of west making for strong cross onshore conditions with waves in the 3-4ft blown onshore size. Sunday sees the swell jump a little as it goes more westerly but the winds are blowing directly onshore making for messy conditions. Monday has the best wind direction but the strength is a little strong cross offshore with 2-4ft waves. Tides are high at 7.30am and pm Saturday, 8am and pm and 8.30am and near to 9pm. Leave 2 hours either side for safe entry and exit.

North West

Strandhill is looking nice in the morning with offshore conditions all the way up to lunch time with 6ft conditions with bigger sets and then the conditions turn strong cross shore as the storm kicks in Saturday evening. Sunday then stays onshore all day making for messy 6ft blown onshore conditions all day with no shelter anywhere from the westerly winds. Monday then turns back to offshore for Strandhill with 3-4ft conditions. In the Bundoran area it is looking like Saturday morning will have nice offshore conditions but with the size this will probably only favour Rossnowlagh which could have some nice 3-4ft conditions. It will probably be wonky at Tullan for the morning. By the afternoon the storm kicks in and the wind goes strong southerly with the winds and then Sunday has strong onshore westerly winds. Monday then has nice offshore conditions but the winds are a little strong with 3-4ft waves all day.

North Coast

Saturday has the best conditions for East Strand early in the morning up until around 10am when the winds just pick up and get too strong with the storm. Waves would be in the 3-4ft range for the day. Sunday sees the winds go westerly so it’s onshore and messy. Monday sees the winds turn offshore again for East Strand but the waves will probably only be 2-3ft so the strength of the winds may make it less fun.
